MCGT is holding it's annual conference Saturday, Oct. 21st at the University of St. Thomas. The conference keynote speaker is Dr. James Webb, highly respected researcher and author in the field of gifted education.

The conference consists of adult workshop sessions on topics such as Social and Emotional Adjustment of Gifted and Talented Students, The Underachievement Dilemma, Working With Your School to Improve Gifted and Talented Programs: What Parents Should Know; a full day children's program, lunch, vendors, and information tables on such programs and organizations as Concordia Language Villages, Midwest Talent Search, Mensa, National Association for Gifted Children.

Cost is $50 members, $65 non-members. You can pay the member rate if you join MCGT with your conference registration. To register, see www.mcgt.net.

Discover Meetings
Each fall, most schools in the district will have a meeting for parents with students in the Discover program. I encourage parents to attend these to receive information on the Discover program, and other opportunities and resources pertaining to the gifted child. Watch for an announcement from your gifted ed specialist.

Midwest Academic Talent Search
This is an opportunity for your child to take what's known as an "out-of-level" test to determine the true level at which your child is achieving. If your child scores in the top 5% on grade level achievement tests, you should consider registering your child to take these tests. Children in grades 3-9 are eligible. Children in grades 3-6 take the Explore test (an 8th grade level test) and children in grades 6-9 take the SAT or ACT (the scores don't count until 9th grade, so it also serves as good practice for when they do count).

Registration Deadline: October 30th
Testing dates are in January and February in the Twin Cities area.
Online registration is available. Cost is $52 for Explore, $59 for the SAT or ACT.

MCGT CHAT Nights
Connect, Help, Advocate, Talk
The first Thursday of the Month
7 – 8:30 p.m.
Sponsored by Minnesota Council for Gifted and Talented

CHAT (Connect, Help, Advocate, Talk) Nights are dedicated to informally
connecting parents of gifted children, helping them to find other
parents who are in similar situations, who have an ear to listen,
experiences to share, and solutions to offer.  Each night will start with a brief
(10 –15 minutes) presentation on a topic of interest and then separate
out into smaller groups to allow for discussion with other parents of
gifted children. Please come join this new endeavor of the Minnesota Council of Gifted and Talented
(MCGT).  Questions about the CHAT nights can be sent to Teresa Boatman
at teresa.boatman@mcgt.net.
All MCGT CHAT nights are held from 7:00-8:30pm at Lynnhurst Community Center 1345 Minnehaha Parkway, Minneapolis. Childcare is available.
